Plot summary
Colonel Pieter Deventer works for the exiled Dutch government, running intelligence operations to free the Netherlands from Nazi occupation. A German signals unit tracks him down and he is seized in the middle of his last broadcast. The German colonel handling him presses him to turn double agent, while a resistance band under The Scarf storms the strongpoint and keeps him in hiding. After the Germans execute three prominent local figures in reprisal, Deventer reaches England, where he is ordered to watch Carla Van Oven, a socialite whose older husband was one of the three. She has been suspected of working with the Germans, and Deventer brings her into the Dutch underground.

- Betrayed was based on the story of Christiaan Lindemans, a Dutch resistance leader who turned traitor and was nicknamed "King Kong".
- Richard Widmark was at one time considered for the part that Victor Mature played, and Ava Gardner was set for the female lead before Lana Turner replaced her.
- Betrayed was the final film Clark Gable made for MGM under his contract, which ended in March 1954; he worked as an independent afterwards, and his next two films were released by 20th Century Fox.
