Roland Culver
Biography
Roland Culver was an English actor of the stage, film and television. He served as a Royal Air Force pilot from 1918 to 1919 and, after graduating from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, made his stage debut in 1924 at the Hull Repertory Theatre. By 1931 he was appearing in films, known for playing impeccable English gentlemen who kept their emotions hidden. He played Algernon in a 1953 recording of The Importance of Being Earnest and Claudius opposite Paul Scofield's Hamlet in a 1963 Caedmon Shakespeare recording. On Broadway he appeared in Five Finger Exercise in 1960, and his leading role in Ivanov brought a Tony nomination in 1966. He moved into television in the 1960s, playing the Duke of Omnium in the BBC's The Pallisers in 1974, and retired in 1983. He also wrote the play A River Breeze and an autobiography, Not Quite a Gentleman.
