Plot summary
Appendicitis brings journalist Ted York to a bed on a men's ward at Haven Hospital, where he becomes smitten with Nurse Denton. The Colonel in his private room is a gambler whose bets are placed by Mick, the orderly, while Mr. Hinton listens to his radio through headphones. Later that day the boxer Bernie Bishop is admitted with a hand hurt in a bout. The next morning the Sister gathers the nurses, the orderlies and the patients for Matron's inspection; among the nurses is the clumsy student Nurse Dawson. The Matron tours the ward to check on the patients. Ted's editor visits him, and Ted agrees to write articles about his stay in the hospital.
