Plot summary
In 1934, twenty years after Cyrus West died, his surviving cousins travel to his mansion in rural England to watch a filmed reading of his will. Among them are former surgeon Harry Blythe, stuntman Charlie Wilder, hunter Susan Sillsby, her cousin Cicily Young, songwriter Paul Jones and fashion designer Annabelle West. West's lawyer and his longtime maid, Mrs. Pleasant, oversee the gathering. The will names Annabelle the sole beneficiary, provided she spends the night in the house and is judged sane the next morning; a second reel names the heir if she fails. As the family settles in, Dr. Hendricks arrives from a nearby sanitarium with a warning that a disfigured patient who believes he is a cat has escaped.

- Radley Metzger, after years of never losing a censorship case, became the plaintiff in a lawsuit over The Cat and the Canary and won, but the picture was not finally released until 1981, which he said made the timing off.
- Metzger said The Cat and the Canary did tremendous business outside theaters, was the leader in all the syndication packages, never stopped playing, and that he lived off the picture for eight or nine years.
