Plot summary
George Bird sells agricultural machinery. At a routine check-up a physician tells him he has Lampington's disease, a condition identified only recently, and that he has a few weeks left. With no family and no friends, he follows the doctor's advice and takes his savings to an upmarket residential hotel at the seaside resort of Pinebourne. A used clothing salesman sells him two suitcases with international labels and the tailored wardrobe of a dead lord, which fits Bird; he shaves off his mustache. The guests puzzle over who he is.
