Plot summary
Edward Henry 'Denry' Machin is a poor young man in Bursley. At sixteen he changes his school grades to enter a school for gentlemen's sons, then becomes a junior clerk to town clerk Mr. Duncalf. By sending invitations to a grand municipal ball, he adds his own name and wins a bet by asking the Countess of Chell to dance, which gets him fired. Denry becomes a rent collector for Mrs. Codleyn, and his blunt efficiency brings in business from Mr. Calvert. He realizes he can make more by lending money at high interest to tenants in arrears. He also meets Ruth Earp, a dance teacher, and they become engaged.
