Plot summary
Anne Fielding is held up on the London Underground, so she is behind time for her appointment with Victor James Colebrooke. A fellow passenger, Jack Williams, has been delayed as well, and the two of them like each other at once. Once they are back above ground, Jack helps her find Victor. Victor is the grandson of a hangman whose name was widely known, and his mind is coming apart. He loves Anne, and he cannot tell how long he can hold himself back from killing her. Chief Inspector Conway works the case, sifting through the evidence that the killer leaves behind.

- The film's score, by Russian-born émigré composer Mischa Spoliansky, includes extracts from a fake piano concerto, A Voice in the Night, with Eric Harrison as soloist. The piece is an example of the so-called Denham Concerto, a term coined by Steve Race for the short romantic piano-and-orchestra pieces written for 1940s British film scores.
