Biography

Wesley Snipes is an American actor, martial artist, producer and author who built a long career in thrillers, dramas and comedies but became best known for action films. Born in Orlando in 1962 and raised in the Bronx, he made his screen debut in Wildcats (1986) and soon drew notice in Major League (1989), Mo' Better Blues (1990) and King of New York (1990), then broke through as a drug lord in New Jack City (1991). Roles in Jungle Fever (1991), White Men Can't Jump (1992) and Passenger 57 (1992) followed, and he won the Volpi Cup for One Night Stand (1997) after an Independent Spirit Award nomination for The Waterdance (1992). He played Blade in Blade (1998), Blade II (2002), Blade: Trinity (2004) and Deadpool & Wolverine (2024), formed Amen-Ra Films in 1991, and later wrote novels and comics.

    Snipes was discovered by an agent at 23 while performing in a competition, and made his film debut the next year in the Goldie Hawn vehicle Wildcats.

  2. A role that slipped away

    Snipes lobbied hard for the title role in The Last Dragon, but the part went to Taimak, and he was also passed over for Geordi La Forge on Star Trek: The Next Generation.
