Plot summary
Dean Singer has terminal cancer and means to spend his remaining days looking after his protégé, fifteen-year-old Louis Fletcher, known as Zig Zag. Louis is autistic, and numbers stay in his memory in a way little else does. Dean, his mentor through the Big Brother program, found him a job washing dishes at Mr. Walters' restaurant, where the owner is abusive and exploitative. Louis' father neglects and abuses him, and demands money he calls rent, which he passes to Cadillac Tom, the violent loan shark he owes. Pressured for money again, Louis takes it from the safe at the restaurant where he works.
