Plot summary
Joel Garcia earns his living as a writer until a hiking accident on a mountain breaks his neck and leaves him paralyzed. He moves into a rehabilitation center where the other men in the ward include Raymond Hill, who describes a dream of dancing on a lake to keep from sinking, and Bloss. Each man works to rebuild his body and mind, and tension builds among them. Anna, the married woman Joel was having an affair with when the accident happened, is having a hard time of it as well, and the two try to carry on their relationship through his rehabilitation.

- Neal Jimenez wrote The Waterdance as a semi-autobiographical story: its lead, a young fiction writer, becomes paraplegic in a hiking accident and works to rehabilitate his body and mind at a rehabilitation center.
- At the 1992 Independent Spirit Awards, The Waterdance was nominated for four awards and was the only film that year to win two of them, for Best First Feature and Best Screenplay.
