Plot summary
Harlan Regis, a homicide detective with the Metropolitan Police, is handed the murder inquiry after a janitor finds secretary Carla Town dead in a White House restroom. At the White House he meets Nick Spikings, who directs the Secret Service, National Security Advisor Alvin Jordan and agent Nina Chance, a former Olympic gold-medal sharpshooter. Spikings orders Chance to stay close to Regis, and Regis runs into evidence the Secret Service holds back. Meanwhile President Jack Neil is dealing with a hostage crisis in North Korea. Vice President Gordon Dylan and others in his circle want troops sent to free the captives, while Neil will not risk a second Korean War. Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Murder at 1600 (1997)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Warner Bros. objected to the graphic sex scene scripted for the Oval Office as too outrageous and wanted it moved to a side room, but producer Arnold Kopelson defended it, claiming the controversy would be a major selling point; after the Clinton-Lewinsky scandal erupted in 1998, director Little remarked, “Not so crazy now, is it?”
- Clint Eastwood's Malpaso Productions had just made the very similarly themed Absolute Power, and after word of Murder at 1600's excellent test screenings reached them, Eastwood used his influence with Warner Bros. executives Bob Daley and Terry Semel to demand that its January 1997 release be pushed back so Absolute Power could come out first.
- Because Absolute Power was occupying the Oval Office set built for Dave, a new one was built at Cinespace Film Studios in Kleinburg; production designer Nelson Coates called it “the most architecturally accurate” recreation of the room, and it still stands, used in productions such as Dick and The Sentinel.
