Plot summary
John Cutter's career has taken him through police work, the military and the Secret Service, and he now teaches flight crews how to handle terrorism and defend themselves. He is still troubled by his wife's death in a robbery at a convenience store. His old friend Sly Delvecchio brings him an offer of a senior post in a new anti-terrorism division at Atlantic International Airlines, and the airline's president, Stuart Ramsey, helps persuade him to take it. Cutter boards a flight to Los Angeles as its fifty-seventh passenger, and Marti Slayton, one of his former students, is a flight attendant. Also on board is Charles Rane, a British terrorist and drug lord the FBI arrested in Miami and is taking to Los Angeles for trial, under escort.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Raffill couldn't come up with a title for the film, until he noticed a bottle of Heinz ketchup and named it Passenger 57 after the '57 varieties' mark on the label.
- Raffill said the head of the studio told him, “If I make that movie, they'll blow up the theaters”, so he did a couple of re-writes for Warner Bros., and only his work in the first quarter of the resulting film remains.
- Filming took place in star Wesley Snipes' hometown of Orlando, Florida, using the old hangar and control tower of the former Naval Air Station Sanford for key scenes just before the buildings were torn down.
- The film's box-office success launched Wesley Snipes as an action star, leading directly to his roles in Money Train, Drop Zone, Demolition Man, The Art of War, and the Blade trilogy.
- The film's main title theme was omitted from the soundtrack album and can instead be found on the later collection Stanley Clarke: At the Movies, while the track “Chaos on the Tarmac” has been re-used for the trailer of another action film, Sudden Death.
- Passenger 57 opened at number one in 1,734 theaters, with opening weekend receipts of $10,513,925, and its final US domestic gross receipts came to $44,065,653.
