Plot summary
Rudy Ray Moore works at Dolphin's of Hollywood, a Los Angeles record store, and keeps pushing to get on its in-store radio station while emceeing for Ben Taylor's band at a club. The owner turns down his request for a comedy slot. One day a homeless man named Ricco wanders into the store with loud rhyming proclamations, one of them naming Dolemite. Moore turns that name into a stage character, dresses as a pimp with a cane, and performs crude rhymes with Taylor's band behind him. He records the comedy album Eat Out More Often at Jimmy Lynch's home and sells copies from his car trunk when labels pass on it, until word of mouth brings the Bihari brothers, who strike a deal to market the record.

- Eddie Murphy had long wanted to make a Rudy Ray Moore biopic: he met screenwriters Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski in 2003, and arranged a meeting between them and Moore, who told them many of his life stories before his death in 2008. Early attempts to make the film never came to fruition.
- Nicholas Josef von Sternberg, the director of photography of the original Dolemite, visited the set during filming, and according to director Craig Brewer he contributed additional stories that didn't make it into the film.
