Plot summary
Molly McGrath coaches girls' track at Prescott High, an affluent school, and she applies for the vacant football job at Central High, an inner-city Chicago school. Her father was a famed football coach, and she wants a team of her own. Central High's campus is the kind of place that needs guard dogs, and she expects snickers from fellow staff members and from her former husband. Her idealism and optimism meet racial and gender prejudice there, and the players she inherits are unruly. She also wants to keep custody of her daughters, Alice and Marian, while she takes over the team.
