Plot summary
Dr Mitchell shows Chris Cronyn and his wife Linda a set of photographs taken at an observatory in Southern California that appear to show the Martians have melted the icecaps of their planet and are irrigating its deserts. Encouraged, Chris wants to send another signal. Linda doubts the wisdom of contacting Mars and what it might bring, but Chris argues her around. Their transmitter works on technology developed by Franz Calder, a brilliant scientist whom authorities want as a Nazi war criminal. At a research station in the Andes, agents question Calder, who tells them he has intercepted the American messages. Admiral Bill Carey visits the Cronyns, who admit Mars only sends back their own signal; their son Stewart suggests sending a mathematical equation.
