Plot summary
Simon Haldane keeps the books at the Faulkner Phonograph Company and is the office joke. Agatha Hathaway, a co-worker, loves him, and one rainy night she and her mother come to his home to insist he marry her. Outside, two detectives are chasing a young woman who escapes them by slipping into the house and hiding in a closet. Simon sends the detectives and the Hathaways away, then finds the intruder, who calls herself Doris, drying her clothes before the fireplace in her undergarments. He has no interest in women and tries to make her go; she pretends to faint, and a doctor says she must stay put for several days. Simon hands over his bed. In the morning his maid Easter hears a woman's voice from his room and concludes he has married.
