Plot summary

Steven Kenet, a former bomber pilot who flew as a mercenary after the war, drives his car into a river with the body of his wife Helen in the passenger seat, and survives. He says a wartime head injury, made worse by a crash in Burma, has left him with no memory of what happened. Until the county psychiatric hospital decides whether he can be charged with her murder, he stays on a ward, where Dr. Ann Lorrison takes an interest in his case. An operation could end the headaches and blackouts that trouble him, but he refuses it, believing he is guilty, and says he would rather remain on the ward than go to jail. The district attorney's office pushes the hospital to operate anyway, and the administrators refuse.
