Plot summary
Dr. Lorenz is a scientist who keeps his aging wife, the Countess, young with glandular fluid taken from brides. He sends Alice Wentworth an orchid on her wedding day, and its scent leaves her in a state resembling death; her body vanishes. Hers is one of several brides who have seemed to die at the altar, their bodies then disappearing on the way to the hospital or mortuary; the police are stymied. Patricia Hunter, a journalist, investigates, finds an unusual orchid, and is directed to Lorenz, a known expert on orchids.
