Plot summary
Hibble, a servant, takes a girl named Flora out of a London orphanage where the nuns beat her, and the two travel toward the American colonies, where Flora is to be raised by her guardian, Mrs. Allworthy. On the road, Hibble reads Flora the life story of her mother, Moll Flanders. Moll was born in a prison cell, and her mother was hanged for theft. She spends her childhood in a church orphanage, where a priest gropes her; she drives a knitting needle into his hand and is whipped for it. She runs away, is arrested, and ends up in the household of Mrs. Allworthy, the ruthless owner of an upscale London brothel, where Moll works as a prostitute and befriends Hibble. A kindly anatomy artist, Jonathan, later pays her to model for him.
