Plot summary
In New York City in 1979, Gabriel Richmond is an architect whose life looks rich from the outside: a caring wife, a loving daughter and friends he has known for years. He spends most days in a movie theater instead of at his desk, drawn to made-up characters he finds easier to relate to than the people around him. When one of those stories holds a mirror to his own life, he starts writing a play closely based on his marriage and his friendships. What began as a hobby takes over his attention, and a literary agent friend agrees to represent him. He works with a tape recorder and a typewriter.
