James Naughton
Biography
James Naughton is an American actor and director whose career spans stage, film, and television. Born in Middletown, Connecticut, he trained at Brown University and the Yale School of Drama before beginning in Broadway dramas and musicals. He received a Theatre World Award for his off-Broadway breakthrough in Long Day's Journey into Night in 1971. Naughton won the Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical for City of Angels in 1990 and again for Chicago in 1997, a double win achieved by only eight other performers. His film work includes The Paper Chase (1973), The First Wives Club (1996), The Devil Wears Prada (2006), and Factory Girl (2006). On television, he starred as astronaut Pete Burke in the 1974 series Planet of the Apes and had a recurring role as William van der Bilt on Gossip Girl from 2009 to 2012. He has also directed plays, including a 2002 revival of Our Town.
