Plot summary
Seven months pregnant at seventeen, Novalee Nation is riding from Tennessee toward California with her boyfriend, Willy Jack Pickens. In Sequoyah, Oklahoma, he drives away from a Wal-Mart without her. The change she gets at the checkout comes to $5.55, and the number 5 has meant bad luck to her since her mother left her on her fifth birthday. That night the store closes and locks with her still inside. Sister Husband, who runs the town's Welcome Wagon, mistakes her for a relative and gives her a welcome basket and a buckeye tree.
