Plot summary
Margarethe Fisher Van Den Meer once lived as a lady of means, but hard times have forced her to take work as a housekeeper. She drugs her employer, Master Schoenmacker, and marries him, only for his shipment of tulips to lose its worth. The household's last hope is a match for one of the daughters, and the prince is the prize. Dowager Queen Maria de Medici holds a great ball where such a match could be made. Margarethe's daughter Iris loves the painter Casper, whose master she has sat for as a model. Clara Van Den Meer is the other daughter in the house.
