Plot summary
Roxeanne de Persand, a poet living in Paris, is pregnant with her second child when her half-sister Isabel Walker arrives from the United States. Roxeanne's French husband, Charles-Henri de Persand, has just walked out, and he wants a divorce that Roxeanne refuses to grant. The two families also disagree about a painting of Saint Ursula by Georges de La Tour that has long belonged to the Walkers but is in Roxeanne's possession; French community property law leaves its ownership in question. The Louvre calls the picture worthless, while a curator at the J. Paul Getty Museum believes it is genuinely by La Tour. Isabel is offered a job by Olivia Pace, a Paris-based American author, and meets Charles-Henri's relatives, among them his married uncle, Edgar Cosset.
