Plot summary
Sarah Nolan, a divorced preschool teacher, has no interest in dating, but her family keeps pressing her with photos of eligible men. Her sister Carol goes further, posting a profile for her on an online dating site headed by the demand that any suitor must love dogs. Sarah, who is minding her brother Michael's Newfoundland while he sorts out his marriage, works through a run of mismatches, among them a man who cries and a criminal. Jake Anderson, a recent divorcé, would rather work on his handcrafted boats than be matched by his friend Charlie. Their first date at a dog park begins badly when Jake arrives with a borrowed terrier and offends her by analyzing her profile.

- Mother Teresa, the dog in the film, was played by two females, Molly and Mabel; as Lane explained, "Like with kids, they prefer hiring twins." Boone Narr trained the pair for several months before filming, and during filming they were still puppies, six months old and 80 pounds.
- Diane Lane, who took the part partly because she wanted to keep the shoot local, was extremely nervous about any improvisation Cusack added to the film: "I start blushing profusely and I get all sweaty and, I don't know. Old school."
- Kyra Sedgwick was originally cast in the part of Carol Nolan in Must Love Dogs, but the role was ultimately played by Elizabeth Perkins.
