Plot summary
Two men are convicted of attacking Matthew Shepard, and the story follows what comes next for his parents, Dennis and Judy. They sit through the sentencing phase of the trial, which is harder on them than the conviction was, and they enter it wanting the death penalty for their son's killers. Matthew was a 21-year-old gay college student. In 1998 he is robbed and beaten, and his attackers leave him tied to a fence. Police find him and take him to a hospital, where he dies of his injuries. In between the court sessions, the story goes back over the weeks leading to his death.
