Plot summary
Miriam Knight is bright and well-meaning, but her looks and weight make her an easy target. She has moved between colleges five times in three years, sampling many classes, and still has no boyfriend. At her latest school the treatment gets worse, and she is ignored or humiliated by nearly everyone around her. When she wins the lead in a play, her jealous roommate, who knows Miriam is allergic to roses, puts some in a box during the performance. Miriam sneezes through her scene, flees the campus in tears, and is hurt in a car crash. The crash leaves her needing reconstructive surgery on her face.
