Plot summary
Jane Claremont is a playwright in New York whose play, drawn from the childhood she spent with an imaginary friend, has been a hit, and a film version is in the works. Her mother, Vivian, a Broadway producer, oversees both Jane's career and her life. Jane is engaged to Hugh, a television star who wants the leading role in the movie. Michael was the imaginary friend assigned to Jane from the age of five; he stayed until her tenth birthday, when such companions are called away and their children forget them. Jane never did. Off duty between charges, Michael spots her as an adult for the first time and follows her through the city, unseen, until the two meet again.
