George Reeves
Biography
George Reeves was an American actor, born in Woolstock, Iowa, who began acting and singing as a student before studying at the Pasadena Playhouse. His film career began in 1939 with a minor part in Gone with the Wind (1939), and stage work soon brought him a Warner Brothers contract. He appeared in The Strawberry Blonde (1941), later freelanced in westerns, and starred opposite Claudette Colbert in So Proudly We Hail (1943). After serving in the Army during the Second World War, he returned to Hollywood for Rancho Notorious (1952) and a small role in From Here to Eternity (1953), a Best Picture winner. He became best known for his role as Clark Kent and Superman in Adventures of Superman, the television series that aired from 1952 to 1958, and he also appeared in Superman and the Mole Men (1951) and The Blue Gardenia (1953). His final film was Westward Ho the Wagons (1956).

First role
Reeves began his film career in 1939, playing Stuart Tarleton, a suitor of Scarlett O'Hara in Gone with the Wind. The role was minor, though he and Fred Crane appeared in the opening scene.
Big break
After Gone with the Wind, Reeves returned to the Pasadena Playhouse and won the lead in the play Pancho, which directly landed him a Warner Brothers contract.
About the name
After being contracted to Warner Brothers, Reeves was made by the studio to change his professional name to George Reeves. The screen credit he received for Gone with the Wind shows that change.
Big break
Reeves was offered the Superman role in a new series, Adventures of Superman, in June 1951. Like many actors then, he thought television unimportant and doubted many people would see his work, so he hesitated to accept.
A first
In 1953, Reeves played Sergeant Maylon Stark, a minor character in From Here to Eternity. The film won the Academy Award for Best Picture, making him one of the actors who appeared in two Best Picture films.
A change of course
Inspired by So Proudly We Hail!, Reeves paused his budding acting career to enlist in the U.S. Army, and early in 1943 he was drafted. Assigned to the U.S. Army Air Forces, he performed in its Broadway show Winged Victory, which had a long run, a national tour and a movie version.
