Jim Bannon
Biography
Jim Bannon was an American actor and radio announcer who started in broadcasting at Kansas City's KCKN before moving to Los Angeles in 1937. He announced on radio programs including The Great Gildersleeve and Stars over Hollywood, and his most prominent acting role was Detective Jack Packard in I Love a Mystery, which he reprised for a 1945 Columbia Pictures film adaptation. He signed with Columbia in 1946, then moved to Republic Pictures, where he worked as a stuntman and double before taking the lead in Dangers of the Canadian Mounted, a 1948 serial. He was the last actor to portray the cowboy Red Ryder, completing the final four films in that B-movie series between 1949 and 1950. He later starred in the television series The Adventures of Champion and appeared in Hawkins Falls, Population 6200, with bit parts on Sea Hunt and Wagon Train. His final role was a 1965 guest spot on Death Valley Days.

A first
Jim Bannon was best known for portraying the fictional cowboy Red Ryder, the fourth and final actor in the long-running B-movie series. Between 1949 and 1950 he completed the last four pictures, distributed by Eagle-Lion Films after Republic let its series rights expire.
Getting ready for a role
Bannon said in 1965 that playing Red Ryder was the toughest part of the role, since the pictures were in color.
First role
Bannon signed with Columbia in 1946, hoping to become a Western movie star, then switched to Republic Pictures the following year. At Republic he worked as a stuntman and double before landing the lead in the 1948 serial Dangers of the Canadian Mounted.
