Plot summary
Bill O'Brien is a New York con man on the lookout for a mark, and at a nightclub he settles on Charles Engle, a small-time businessman whose $3,000 in embezzled money has gone to his wife's spending and must be repaid by morning. The showgirl Nina Barona agrees to help steer Charles into a poker game. The playwright Gene Gibbons, another disappointed man in the club, finds the suicide note in Charles's coat and wants to give him a better ending. The gangster Dutch Enright sets up the game. Bill means to take Charles's money, and does not know that Charles has only until six in the morning to pay back what he took.
