John Carroll
Biography
John Carroll was an American actor who spent his early screen years in small roles credited to his birth name before adopting the name John Carroll for Hi, Gaucho! in 1935. Born in New Orleans, he appeared in several 1930s Westerns and played Zorro in Zorro Rides Again (1937). He took the male lead in Go West (1940), a Western comedy starring the Marx Brothers. Probably his best-known role was Woody Jason in Flying Tigers (1942) with John Wayne. His film career was paused when he served during World War II as a pilot with the U.S. Army Air Corps in North Africa. Later credits included the comedy A Letter for Evie (1945), the Budd Boetticher western Decision at Sundown (1957) as the villain Tate Kimbrough, Ride in a Pink Car (1974), and Orson Welles's The Other Side of the Wind, which he joined in 1975 and which was released in 2018. He died in 1979.
