Plot summary
A Life magazine photographer comes to the Music Box, the London music hall that staged a performance every night through the Blitz. Sam Royce, the stage manager, remembers the early days of the war, when impresario May Tolliver was rehearsing her company. Dancer Tommy Lawson auditions, but because he makes up his steps as he goes, she will not take him on. Rosalind Bruce and Judy Kane, the troupe's two Americans, show him their numbers, and he earns a place. RAF pilot Paul Lundy attends a performance and falls for Rosalind. When German planes bomb the theater, the audience and the performers shelter in the basement, and Paul asks her to dinner. She refuses, but later that night, at a restaurant near the theater, she and Judy find him waiting with champagne, and she begins to date him.
