Plot summary
Jonathan Pride teaches dance in Boston in 1820, and when he sets out to visit his aunt he is seized by pirates and put to work as a galley boy. The ship puts in near Las Palomas, in Spanish California, and Jonathan gets away with his umbrella and music box. A shepherd sees him and carries word to the village, where the excitable townsfolk turn his arrival into a pirate invasion. Everyone, the Alcalde Don Emilio Perena included, takes Jonathan for the captain of the pirate ship, though he insists he is only a dance master. The Alcalde's daughter Serafina wants to learn the waltz, and Captain Don Balthazar of the Monterey guards is her suitor.
