Plot summary

Lewellen is twelve and lives in rural Alabama in 1956 with the stern, religious grandmother who raises her, because her father, Lou, struggles with alcoholism and cannot give her a stable home. Lou tries to make her happy and brings her an Elvis Presley record. She spends the summer swimming in the pond and roaming the woods with her best friend Buddy, and the two befriend Grasshopper, a girl staying with her grandparents. Lou also dates Ellen. When Lewellen learns that Elvis is coming to Alabama for a concert, she begins to idolize him and sing his songs, and Charles, a snake handler, explains that something painful can be turned into something good.

  • Hounddog's rape scene, involving Dakota Fanning before she was of consent age, made the film notorious: at the Sundance Film Festival it was nicknamed "the Dakota Fanning rape movie", though the scene showed only her face and her character's reaction to it.
  • After the outcry over Hounddog, North Carolina State Senator Phil Berger called for all future films made in the state to have their scripts approved in advance if they wanted the normal production subsidy, though he had not seen the film.
  • Dakota Fanning expressed anger at the attacks over the film, saying most of them were directed at her mother.
