Plot summary
At a ouija board with his aunt Hanna, eleven year old Robbie Mannheim tries to contact the other world, and keeps trying after his mother forbids it. A desk topples onto a classmate's hand at school, and Robbie, blamed, is expelled. At home a chair slides out from under him when his father moves to punish him, and his parents come to think something is harming their son. The Lutheran pastor Reverend Eckhardt keeps the boy under observation at his house, where noises and fits follow, and says the Catholics should treat him. Father Raymond McBride visits the family, is attacked during a fit, and brings Father Bowden, a World War II veteran troubled by nightmares, flashbacks and alcoholism. Archbishop Hume names Bowden to handle the case.
