Plot summary
T.J. is a high school freshman. His mother died in a car crash two months earlier, and he lives with his father Paul and his grandmother Madeleine. Paul swallows pills and stays on the couch; Madeleine cooks and chats and keeps the household running. T.J. cannot let go of the wrecked car and trails it when a tow truck hauls it off to a salvage yard, where Dustin, the owner's son, is a bully. Nicole, a grocery clerk, helps T.J. once, and he watches her at work at the store. By happenstance, Hesher moves in with the family: a vulgar, foul-mouthed squatter with no regard for social conventions.

- Australian actor Scott Ryan was first cast as Hesher and began rehearsing with Natalie Portman, before John C. Reilly pulled out and Joseph Gordon-Levitt was recast in the role.
- The character Hesher was inspired by Metallica's former bass player Cliff Burton, and Metallica let the film use their logo font on the poster and their songs on the soundtrack.
- Natalie Portman signed on to play the female lead and to work as a producer for the first time, after director Spencer Susser sent her the script; he had met her while making a behind-the-scenes video on the set of Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones.
