Plot summary
Sixteen-year-old Carrie White is an outcast at her high school, where her classmates mock her. In the gym shower she panics at her first period, and the other girls throw tampons and pads at her until Miss Collins, her gym teacher, steps in. At home, her mother Margaret, who is religiously fanatical, calls the bleeding a sin and locks her in a prayer closet. Miss Collins punishes the girls with exercise detention, and Chris Hargensen loses her prom ticket. Carrie learns she can move objects with her mind and studies telekinesis. Sue Snell, sorry for joining the bullying, asks her boyfriend Tommy Ross to take Carrie to the prom. Carrie suspects a prank, then accepts; Margaret forbids her to go.

- To land the part of Carrie White, Sissy Spacek pulled out of a scheduled television commercial, rubbed Vaseline into her hair, left her face unwashed and wore a cut-down sailor dress her mother had made for her in seventh grade to the screen test.
- Stephen King was 26 years old and was paid just $2,500 for the film rights to his first published novel, Carrie, a deal he later said he felt fortunate to have happen to his first book.
- A mechanical malfunction ruined the night the model of the Whites' home was to be pelted by stones, so the filmmakers burned the miniature down instead and cut the stone scenes, and the original opening is presumed lost.

The final scene, with Sue Snell (Amy Irving) reaching toward Carrie's grave, was shot backwards for a dreamlike quality and was inspired by Deliverance; Sissy Spacek was buried in rocks and gravel because she insisted on using her own hand.SPOILER
Special effects supervisor Gregory M. Auer devised the mechanism that stabbed Piper Laurie with flying kitchen knives, and his effects work on Carrie influenced many later horror movies.- Brian De Palma started Carrie with director of photography Isidore Mankofsky, but a conflict between the two led to Mankofsky being replaced by Mario Tosi.
- Carrie was both the first Stephen King novel to be published and the first of his novels to be turned into a feature film.
