Plot summary
Delia Leslie becomes engaged to Phil Friskett, one of the few bachelors left in Christchurch, New Zealand, where she lives with her sisters Barbara, Anne and Evelyn as the city's men, among them their brother Kit and Barbara's husband Mark, prepare to leave for the war. Anne disapproves of the match. After the wedding Delia takes a job in Wellington with the New Zealand Navy. When hundreds of U.S. Marines arrive following the attack on Pearl Harbor, the local women welcome the attention, and Capt. Richard Bates receives a dinner invitation from Evelyn. Anne sends Barbara to look in on Delia in Wellington, and there Barbara meets Jack Harding, a Marine who checks the backgrounds of New Zealand women who want to marry American servicemen.

- Robert Wise and Mark Robson first bought the rights to Michener's story while at RKO, but casting problems delayed the film when Hecht-Hill-Lancaster took it over and planned to star Burt Lancaster; after that company made The Kentuckian instead, MGM bought the rights and wanted its contract player Glenn Ford as the lead Marine.
- Until They Sail was Sandra Dee's first film. The Soviet animated feature The Snow Queen is often listed as her first credit because she and other Hollywood stars voiced the English-language version, but that English-language audio was not actually made until 1959.
