Plot summary
Mokar, an agent of the regent Prince Mustapha, hires the master thief Yussef to kill the baby prince Hussein, so that Mustapha can rule Tangiers in the child's place. Yussef refuses the murder and keeps the infant, bringing him up as his own son under the name Julna. Yussef hides the proof of the boy's birth, the royal seal tattooed on his arm, beneath a silver band. Grown, Julna breaks into Mustapha's palace to rob the treasury, is blocked by the barred window, and spies Mustapha's daughter Yasmin. She is betrothed to Hedjah, prince of Algiers, who brings her the Pearl of Fatima. Tina, a young acrobat and thief, steals the gem, and Hedjah threatens to destroy the city unless it is returned within a month.
