Plot summary
Aging millionaire Samuel Fulton has no family. He means his estate to go to the relatives of Millicent Blaisdell, the woman he loved, whose rejection spurred him to make his fortune. His lawyer, Edward Norton, doubts they would spend it well. Samuel travels to Hilverton, Vermont, and rents a room in the Blaisdell house as John Smith. The family takes him in reluctantly, though the youngest daughter, Roberta, welcomes him. Charles Blaisdell's drugstore employs Dan Stebbins as a soda jerk, and Charles's wife Harriet wants their daughter Millie to wed Carl Pennock, a wealthy snob, though Millie prefers Dan.
