Plot summary
Recently widowed Emily Boynton holds her late husband's fortune and rules his adult children, Lennox, Raymond and Carol, along with Ginevra, her own daughter. She makes the family lawyer, Jefferson Cope, destroy a later will that would have divided the estate among the children, keeping them dependent on her. Emily takes the family on a cruise to the Holy Land, and Cope and Nadine, Lennox's wife, travel with them. Hercule Poirot, aboard the same ship, meets his friend Dr. Sarah King, who becomes close to Raymond. Lady Westholme, a British member of parliament touring Palestine, and her secretary, Miss Quinton, join the same group. At the dig by the Dead Sea, Emily is found dead, and Poirot takes up the case.
