Plot summary
In July 1945, the American correspondent James O'Donnell bribes a Soviet sentry with cigarettes to enter the dark, flooded Führerbunker in Berlin. His visit frames the story of the months before, when the Third Reich was collapsing and Allied forces were attacking the capital. Adolf Hitler withdraws into the fortified bunker with his senior staff. Gripped by delusions of grandeur and despair, he orders a hopeless last stand, relying on resources that exist largely in his own mind, and resists the pleas of rational figures like Albert Speer.
