Plot summary
Alain de Maletroit blames his younger brother Edmond for stealing the woman he loved. She died giving birth to Blanche, and Edmond has been locked in Alain's dungeon for twenty years while Blanche believes her father is dead. Wanting to degrade his niece, Alain intends to marry her to a man of no worth. He tricks the high-born drunkard Denis de Beaulieu into believing that he killed a man; fleeing the mob, Denis slips into the Maletroit chateau by a door that cannot be opened from within. Alain then keeps him prisoner there, meaning to force Blanche into marriage with him.
