Jim Hutton
Biography
Jim Hutton was an American actor who worked in film and television and was best known for playing Ellery Queen in the 1970s series of that name and for his screen partnership with Paula Prentiss. Born in Binghamton, New York, he enrolled at Niagara University and performed in summer stock before serving in the Army from 1956 to 1959, where he made training films and helped start an English-language theater in Berlin. Douglas Sirk spotted him on stage and cast him in A Time to Love and a Time to Die (1958). Hutton signed with MGM and had a hit with Where the Boys Are (1960), the first of four films with Prentiss. His credits included The Honeymoon Machine (1961), Bachelor in Paradise (1961), Period of Adjustment (1962), Major Dundee (1965), Walk Don't Run (1966), The Green Berets (1968), Hellfighters (1968), Don't Be Afraid of the Dark (1973), and Psychic Killer (1975). He died in 1979.

Big break
While serving in the Army in West Germany, Hutton played Captain Queeg in a production of The Caine Mutiny Court Martial. Douglas Sirk spotted him there and offered him a small role in the film A Time to Love and a Time to Die.

Hutton was set to play a soldier in How the West Was Won but the role went to Russ Tamblyn.

Hutton grew tired of appearing in comedies, so he turned down scripts from MGM for 15 months. The studio eventually let him out of his contract.
