Plot summary
Men who know the savings-and-loan building from the inside rob it, and a wiretap later identifies a mild-mannered teller, Leon Poole, as their accomplice. When officers close in on his apartment, Poole opens fire, and in the exchange Detective Sam Wagner accidentally shoots Poole's wife, whose presence there nobody has mentioned. Poole's trial ends with a ten-year sentence and a promise that Wagner will pay. Two years on, Wagner sits at a desk because Lila, his wife, dreads what the threat may cost them. Poole has been moved to a prison honor farm for good conduct, and Sam is recalled to active duty when he escapes.
