Plot summary
Capt. John Hayes is a Union army officer in 1864. He is placed in charge of the Overland stagecoach line, which ships California gold east to fund the war effort. Hayes returns to his hometown of Julesburg, Colorado, and meets Rod Miller, a soldier who has lost an arm, and Rod's wife Jeanie. Hayes plans to ask the Millers to run an Overland station from their farm. He also encounters Clay Putnam, who has left Overland and married Norma, the woman Hayes once loved. Confederate raiders led by gunman Mace attack Overland stations and steal gold shipments. Mace's men pick a fight with Rod, mocking his missing arm.
