Plot summary
At a convent in Norfolk, England, Sister Mary Bonaventure oversees the hospital ward. She carries the grief of her sister's suicide and has shared that burden with the Mother Superior. When heavy rain washes out the roads, Sergeant Melling of the police brings Valerie Carns to the convent. Valerie is a condemned murderer being taken to prison. A court found Valerie guilty of poisoning Jason, her brother, who played the piano. Dr. Jeffreys, who treated Jason and runs the hospital where Sister Mary works, says Valerie gave Jason a fatal dose of his medicine. Valerie continues to say she is innocent. She asks Sister Mary to summon Sidney Kingham, her fiancé, so he can visit.

- Thunder on the Hill was first announced in August 1947 with Robert Siodmak to direct, Joseph Sistrom to produce, and Joan Fontaine and Burt Lancaster to star. Delays for their other films and Fontaine's pregnancy pushed shooting to 1949, by which time the entire production team and stars had been replaced.
