Frank Thring
Biography
Frank Thring was an Australian character actor and theater director who worked in radio, stage, television, and film. Born in Melbourne, he was the son of a theater producer and began his career at age 15 on radio station 3XY. After serving in the Royal Australian Air Force, he took up professional stage roles in the mid-1940s, and later made his British debut. He became known for playing villains in Hollywood epics, most famously as Pontius Pilate in Ben-Hur (1959) and as Herod Antipas in King of Kings (1961). Other screen credits included The Vikings (1958), El Cid (1961), Age of Consent (1969), The Man from Hong Kong (1975), Mad Dog Morgan (1976), Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome (1985), and Howling III (1987). He won the Erik Kuttner Award for Acting in 1965 and appeared on television in Skippy the Bush Kangaroo. He died in 1994.
