Herbert Rudley
Biography
Herbert Rudley was an American character actor whose work spanned theater, film and television. Born in Philadelphia, he studied at Temple University until a scholarship brought him to Eva Le Gallienne's Civic Repertory Theatre; there he trained and turned professional. He acted with that company for most of three seasons, first took the stage in 1926, and made his Broadway debut in 1931 in Did I Say No. Other Broadway appearances included The Threepenny Opera, Macbeth, The Eternal Road and Abe Lincoln in Illinois. On screen he appeared in the 1940 film version of Abe Lincoln in Illinois, then spent four decades in supporting parts such as The Seventh Cross (1944), A Walk in the Sun (1945), Decoy (1946), The Black Sleep (1956) and The Young Lions (1958). His television work ranged from military roles to comedy, with appearances on You Are There, Gunsmoke and Perry Mason. He co-starred on The Mothers-in-Law and wrote the play Shadow on the Wall.
